-Black, The - Referring to outerspace, especially deep space
-Blue Sun- A company that sells food products (and certainly more). Blue sun logos are seen on food cans and advertisements throughout the 'verse. The motto from their commercials: Live life with Blue Sun.
-Bowden's Malady- A degenerative affliction of the bone and muscle. Afflicts the settlers of Paradiso in the Georgia System.
-Browncoats- Referring to the "independents" or rebels against the Alliance, likely in reference to their military uniform.

-Companion - An academy-schooled prostitute practicing legally as part of The Guild, a socially powerful pseudo-religious organization. Companions are highly respected by almost everyone. Their schooling is long and arduous and covers everything from psychology to sword fighting. They can converse with anyone, and make anyone utterly at ease, from a dirt poor farmer to a planetary president. They live by the Guild code and only engage in transactions with customers of their choice.
- Core - Refers to any major city/planet in the Alliance.
-Cortex - The visual/textual Interactive Network of the 26th century.
-Credit - A type of currency. Alliance-based, with no 'solid' component, and used to the exclusion of all else for legitimate transactions on all core worlds. I.e.: all standard transactions on the Core worlds are electronic in nature -- no one can physically hand you a credit. Per unit, a credit is worth more than any other type of currency
-Cruiser - Type of Alliance military vessel. A very large, vertically-aligned vessel that resembles nothing so much as a small city in space.
-Cryo - Short for cryogenic. By the 26th century cryogenic suspension can occur in self-contained mobile unit which makes for an ideal means by which smuggle living contraband in temporary deep freeze hibernation.
-Dedicated Source Box - The DSL / Personal File Server of the Firefly setting.
-Fed Squad - A unit of twenty Alliance soldiers.
-Genseed - A type of genetically engineered crop seed issued to those sent to settle terraformed planets and moons.

-Oh-Two - Oxygen.
-Pasceline - A type of medicine used to treat Bowden's Malady; valuable on the black market.
-Pipeline - A communications channel
-Platinum - A type of hard currency, typically used on border worlds and for most clandestine dealings. For the purposes of conversion, a credit (see above) converts to platinum on approximately a 4:1 ratio, and a platinum coin converts to paper scrip (1 "dollar") at approximately 10:1. (1 credit = 4 platinum = 40 bills).
-Propoxin - A pharmaceutical.
-Purple Belly - An Alliance soldier or officer. (Used in reference to an Alliance Captain in Bushwhacked.) The Alliance's official colors include purple and are used on the abdomen (belly) of Alliance troop body armor.

-Roller - A weapon used in the war presumably a tank or some other conveyance on treads.
-Rutting - Expletive. Mating or 'to mate'.
-Shepherd - Term for a religious minister, preacher, or priest.

-Sky Plex - A space station that has optimized a large portion of it's habitable space for client services such as shopping, entertainment, and so forth.
-TeleFonix - Name of a telecommunications system, like AT&T or MCI.
-Terraforming - Means of bestowing a planet or moon with conditions essential to sustain human and nonhuman life.
-Triplex - A slang term for a planetside shopping and entertainment megaplex.
-U-Day - Short for "Unification Day"; the holiday celebrating the Alliance's defeat of the Independents.
-'Verse - Slang, short for "universe".
-Vitals - Short for vital signs.
-Wave - Audio-visual transmission sent over the Cortex. Full waves (audio and visual) are generally only available within major Alliance systems. Once a ship has left a major system (or is traveling in a system too unimportant to have a Cortex beacon), the send must resort to more primitive means of communication.
-Weave - Medical term, equivalent to stitches.
-Blastomeres- Unapproved (by the Alliance, which of course then equates to "illegal") human organs. They are an unstable medical technology that requires they be transported from point of origin to final destination within a human host (who functions not only as a carrier but an incubator).

Energy Weapons
-Lassiter- First laser pistol invented.
-Laser Pistol- Advanced technology not authorized for public use. Rarely seen out of the Alliance Military’s hands, and for good reason; they’re extremely lethal in the hands of anyone.
-Sonic Rifle- Advancement in non-lethal (insert Jayne's scornful tone here) law enforcement weaponry, this weapon is not generally used by Alliance Military. The weapon emits a low-pitched sound wave with enough force to drive a big man to the ground, much like a taser would today. One benefit of the weapon aside from its lack of lethality is the reduced chance of property damage on those beautiful Core worlds -- the weapon seems to have no adverse effects on non-living objects.
Grenades
-Grizwald- A pressure sensitive grenade the size of a battery.
Catalyzer
Part of the Compression Coil that generates power and makes the engine turn.
Compression Coil
Necessary to run main engine of the ship, including the grav thrust, power plant, and life support. Obviously, a compression coil would be an integral piece of Trace Compression Block engine such as the one that the Firefly Transport uses.
Cooling Drive
Engine part mentioned during Kaylee’s interrogation in Bushwhacked, mounted on Alliance ships in such a way as to be confounded by the Gurtsler Engines.
Fuel Cells
Apparently, the main source of power for the Trace Compression Block engine (as used on a Firefly Transport).
G-Line
Part of a Trace Compression Block engine of the style used on a Firefly Transport. Presumably "G" stands for "gravity", since this is what Kaylee reroutes to get the Grav Boot back online when fixing the engine.
Grav Boot
A part of the Trace Compression Block engine used commonly in Firefly Transport type ships -- this involved the artificial-gravity and anti-inertial portions of the system and, if non-functional, means that the ship can't fly (or, more probably, can't fly safe).
Grav Dampener
Saffron sabotages the filament in this device on Serenity's Trace Compression Block engine so that the ship can't turn.
Given the name, it's likely that what this device actually does is reduce the effect of natural gravity and inertia on the ship and it's crew, so to to be accurate, the ship could still turn, but doing so would probably kill or damage everyone and everything on board.
Gurtsler Engine
A type of propulsion engine used on space ships. The company apparently makes its profit through government contracts, as Kaylee mentions in Bushwhacked that the Alliance cruisers use a number of these types of engines. (A half-dozen mounted under each Cooling Drive, in fact.)
Trace Compression Block
The type of engine utilized in the Firefly Transport. Apparently far superior to the high-quantity, low-quality Gurtsler Engine. One assumes that the oft-mentioned Compression Coil is a key part of this style of engine.
The Trace Compression Block engine includes (or is included as part of):
· Firefly Transport
· Compression Coil
· G-Line
· Grav Boot
· Grav Dampener
· Ship Repair
· Fuel Cells
Alliance Armed Forces
Alliance Carrier
Alliance Cruiser- Mammoth space ships employed by the Alliance. Think 'large floating fortress.'
A.S.R.E.V- Alliance Short Range Enforcement Vessel. Slightly bigger than Serenity and equipped with weapons. Described as an oversized, beat up squad car in the script for The Message.
Independent
Firefly-Class Transport- The '03 Firefly Model was the last version of the Firefly design to make it to production. It featured a number of improvements over the earlier models, notably the extenders on the 'wings' of the ship to separate the rotating VTOL-style ion jets further from the main body of the craft (which both keep the ship from shaking as much and allowed for two shuttle bays to be built into the design). Also, the 03 version of the Firefly is notably longer, with an extended 'neck', longer body, and generally roomier interior.
